The Girl Who Drank the Moon

In the book,The Girl Who Drank the Moon, a town sacrifices a baby to the witch in the forest. The people have been told that this will make the witch leave them alone for another year. The witch, Xan, saves the babies that have been left in the forest and feeds them starlight on the way to their new homes. One year though, Xan gives a baby moonlight accidentally. This enmagics the baby, Luna. Xan decides to raise Luna with help from her friends, Glerk the swamp monster and Fyrian, the tiny dragon.

Part 1: Written Response

Prompt: Luna often writes in her journal as a way to cope with different events in her life and her confusion. Imagine that you live in the Protectorate. Write a journal or diary entry from the perspective of the character you create on the day of the sacrifice. Be sure to include the character’s name, feelings, and activities using supporting details that you inferred from the book. Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this assignment is for students to use their creativity to write a narrative journal. They will focus their journal entry on one day, the day of the sacrifice. They will develop a character and describe their character's feelings on that day. In order to do this, they will need to use what they know about the citizens of the Protectorate from inferences from the book. |

Prompt:
Create a podcast that is takes place the week after the news broke that the Star Children come from the Protectorate and that Xan was not an evil witch. Host an interview to determine the feelings of the people. Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to have students tell a story that includes details of what they think happened after the book ends. They will explore the feelings of the citizens and Star Children and the affect this news will have on the people. Completing this assignment in podcast form will force them to consider pacing, narration, and background music as well. |

Part 3: Digital Storytelling
Prompt:
Create a book trailer that makes readers interested in reading this book. Be sure to include: the book title, author's name, description of main character, the problem the main character faces, and a quote from the book. Purpose: The purpose of this activity is to have students explore ways to showcase books. To complete this assignment they will need to know how to summarize, hook a viewer, and create a recommendation. They will use cameras and computers in order to grow their knowledge of technology usage. |

Part 4: Infographic

Prompt: This novel talks about the power of the moon and stars, as well as different planets. Luna was given moonlight to drink instead of starlight. In the book moonlight is enmagicking while starlight is only magical. Research a planet, moon, star, galaxy, etc. and create an infographic about it. Be sure to include pictures and at least five facts. |
Purpose Statement:
The purpose of this assignment is to have students research different aspects of astronomy and report back on them. They will need to find facts from reliable sources and filter through unnecessary information. They will publish their infographics online and will need to show knowledge of computers skills to complete the assignment. |
