LuLu Walks The Dog by: Judith Viorst
"Lulu Walks the Dog" tells the tail of a spunky girl looking to make some extra money. Her parents suggests she finds a job. Lulu brainstorms, and with the help of her obnoxious neighbor, Fleishman, she is able to create a growing business. The friendship between these two friends is every changing and complicated. In the end, Lulu accomplishes her goal, but we only just find out what it is she wants and if she will invite her business partner to share her glory!

Part 1: Written Response
Purpose:
1st graders will make a character web for Lulu and Fleishman, two main characters in the book. This project will require the students to demonstrate their ability to describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key detail (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.3). Students may also compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in the story in doing this assignment (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.1.9). This assignment focuses on creativity and reader generated tasks by designing their own model to describe the main characters.
Prompt:
Lulu is on a quest to earn some cash. Her mother suggests that she consult the advice of a rather annoying boy that lives down the street, Fleishman. Throughout the story, Lulu Walks the Dog, we learn many character traits. Using your creative minds, design a character web for Lulu and Fleishman. You may also choose to include the dogs: Brutus, Pookie, and Cordelia in your character web.

Using iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, create a digital story of the book “Lulu Walks the Dog” that tells a chapter from a different characters point of view. You will demonstrate the knowledge of character traits in how they relate to the context of the chapter to tell the events thru a different perspective. Be sure to pay attention to the feelings the alternate character has during each experience. This is a creative process and your retelling of the chapter should be reflected in a dialogue model with illustrations relating to the narrative.

Fleishman is a perfect and happy character in the book that Lulu finds terribly obnoxious. In this telling of chapters 1-4, we learn how Fleishman is feeling about helping Lulu in her new business.
