Little Red Henry

Little Red Henry is about a boy who's parents and siblings have done everything for him since he was born and "Frankly, little red-headed Henry was sick of it." He tries to assert his independence through completing tasks such as eating his breakfast, getting dressed, and brushing his teeth all by himself. In the end of the book his parents and siblings are finally able to let go of the desire to do everything for him and get to enjoy their own hobbies, that is until Henry asks them to tuck him in, which they can't seem to refuse. Little Red Henry displays the importance of growing up and becoming independent, while reassuring it's still okay to ask for help sometimes.
Written Response
Purpose:
Through this prompt I hope to help students draw connections between their lives and Little Red Henry by asking them to write about a time where they acted independently and to state these connections in a narrative format. Students will also clearly sequence their events, use dialogue to convey the emotions of the characters, and write of their experiences using word processor.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3.B
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.6

Podcasting
Purpose:
Through making this podcast students will develop their inference skills by having to describe what they believe characters are feeling and/or thinking. They will also explain how these feelings effect the series of events that occur in the story.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.3.B
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.6
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.8
Prompt:
Compose an interview with one of the fictional characters in the story. You will write a script inferring the character's feelings and thoughts at various moments in the book, and then will create a podcast, using the elements of speech, music, and possibly sound effects to engage your listeners.

Digital Storytelling
Purpose:
Students will choose a character and create a movie or trailer explaining the story from this character's perspective. This will continue to develop their inference skills and encourage them to use both the text and the illustrations to determine the thoughts and feelings of a character.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.3
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.6
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.7
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.6
Prompt:
Using an application like iMovie, we will create a movie or trailer that describes the story Little Red Henry from a character's perspective. To infer what you believe your chosen character is thinking and/or feeling throughout the story, refer to the text and illustrations. Use various mediums such as pictures, music, and video effects to convey your thoughts and conclusions and cite the photos you used by listing the URLs in a "Works Cited" section.

Purpose:
Students will refer to the text to answer questions about characters' personality traits and will describe the characters of the book in relation to the main character. This will encourage students to refer to the text to learn more about the characters of a story.
Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.1
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.3.7
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.6
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.3.8
Prompt:
Using an application such as Piktochart, we will make an infographic that describes both our main character Henry, and two other characters of your choosing. In your infographic describe the characters by answering the following questions:
-What does your character like to do?
-Who is your character in relation to the main character, Henry (if the character you're describing is not Henry)?
-How do you believe this character feels about Henry asserting his independence? If the character you're describing is Henry, describe why Henry began to do things for himself.
*Provide a photo of each character by finding one on the internet. Cite your source by giving the URL link to the photo in a "Works Cited" section.
