Part 1: Written Response

Purpose Statement: Based on the main character’s actions in Frindle, create a dialogue to show how others might respond if you invent a new word for a common object
Prompt: In the book, Frindle, by Andrew Clements, Nick decides to invent his own new word. Now, it is your turn to create a new word for any object. Imagine how you might tell someone, such as your friend, about your new word. Create a dialogue where you tell your friend about the new word and use the dialogue to describe how your friend might react to the new word and what happens during your conversation.
Sample Text

“Mandy,” I called out to my best friend. “Look at what I have.”

“Oh, cool. Is that a new hat?” Mandy asked me as she looked at what I was wearing. “I like the picture of the lion on the front.”

“Well, this is new, but it is not called a hat. This is a buntz,” I proudly told her.

“What is a buntz? I have never heard of that before,” Mandy said with a confused expression.

“That is because I created a brand new word for this object.”

“You cannot do that. There is already word for hat in the dictionary!” Mandy shook her head at me with a frown on her face.

“Yeah, but the word, hat, was also only created randomly one day. Why can’t I create my own words for things? If I want to call this thing a buntz, then I should be allowed to!” I exclaimed as I pointed to the buntz on my head.

Mandy shook her head, but said, “You do make a good point. I guess we can call things whatever we want.”

“Maybe you could invent your own new word as well!” I told Mandy as she started to smile back at me.

“Okay, but you have to help me!”

“It’s a deal,” I said as Mandy looked all over the room for objects she could rename.
