AMULET: The Stonekeeper

The Stonekeeper is the first book in the seven-book graphic novel series, Amulet. After a family tragedy, Emily, Navin, and their mother move to an ancestral home to start a new life. On the family's very first night in the mysterious house, Em and Navin's mom is kidnapped by a tentacled creature. Now it's up to Em and Navin to figure out how to set things right and save their mother's life! A book for young ages that keeps even adults of my ages hooked on the first three pages. The story involving most of the plot taking place in an alternate version of our universe, leaves the doors open for young minds to be creative in everything they do!

Purpose Statement
The purpose of this prompt is to have students thinking about how the format of literature is critical to the reader’s experience of the story. Students will be able compare and contrast their experiences in receiving information through written words versus through images without words. In finding information through visuals, students are practicing the strategy of deducing information about the story that is not necessarily explicitly stated. A strategy to help them in becoming more active readers. The prompt allows them to make meaningful connection to the elements of the graphic novel and their further explanation with have them analyzing how maybe these elements impacted their reading experience; and therefore, noticing the importance of experiencing literature across many formats. |

Further explain how images and words in this graphic novel impact your experience of reading this story compared to maybe a chapter book. For this prompt it can be 2-3 pages, double spaced, you might need to include a picture of the book page(s) before your response to those page(s). |

The purpose of this prompt is to have students analyzing the perspective of major themes or main ideas through the eyes of a particular character. Understanding that character's point of view when facing challenges and conflicts having to do with the theme of the story. |

Create a podcast that is a interview with a main character about their perspective on certain challenges that dealt with the story's main theme, idea, or message. Use sound effects or different voices to enhance your podcast. |
Digital Storytelling
Purpose
Students will be using diverse media to visually represent key details, main ideas/events, that happen in the book. In creating a trailer it allows the students to focus on the most important details of the story to include and learn that this trailer represents summarizing the book. |
Prompt
Produce a movie trailer that represents a summary of what the book would be about if it became a movie. Give key details, main ideas, or events from the book to support the content in your trailer. Resources in making this trailer will be provided to you. Use effects to give your audience the feeling of a real movie trailer. Remember you are the producer so you can decide to give away the ending or leave your audience guessing with suspense. Its all up to you! |

The purpose of this project is to have student analyze characters using descriptive words from the text. Students will make inferences based on the storyline to describe their characters and how their characteristics had an impact on the character's actions. This analyzation will practice gaining knowledge explicitly and implicitly understanding. |

These are brief profiles that must include a statement explaining who they are, at least 3 characteristics describing them, and the impact those descriptions had on their actions in the story.
